Latvia by ferry – the best way to get away!

Leave Everything Behind and travel to Latvia.

Nestled between Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia is a seriously underrated travel destination. That’s good news for those who want to get off the beaten track. This small country is home to a population of just 2 million people, with around a third of those living in the capital, Riga.

Latvia’s landscape is a total revelation to the new visitor. Half of the country is covered by forest and there are incredible national parks to visit. And Latvia also has 500km of coastline, so there’s no excuse for not getting some sand between your toes.

The largest and oldest of Latvia’s national parks, Gauja is 90,000 hectares of forest, cliffs, caves, castles and churches, watermills and windmills, natural springs and panoramic views. It’s perfect for hiking and cycling, boating and, in winter, skiing. Take the cable car to enjoy the fantastic view across the Gauja River old valley or, if you’re a thrill seeker, visit in summer to have a go at the zipline or bungee jumping. Back on solid ground, kick your shoes off and enjoy one of the barefoot trails.

Travel in spring when the blooming bird cherry trees turn the vista almost completely white, or in autumn to enjoy the Golden Season and a completely different vibe – Latvia is a country for all seasons.

In summer, Latvians and tourists alike flock to the seaside. Its Baltic Sea coast features white sandy beaches, dunes, steep cliffs and sandstone outcrops. If you’re looking for the surf, visit Pavilosta. This tiny town is a haven for outdoor and water sports enthusiasts, and you’ll find the local smoked fish is just the thing after a day catching waves.

If you’re not a beach fan but like the water, Livu Aquapark is for you. One of the largest in Northern Europe, there are areas for splashing, sliding and relaxing – including saunas and a spa zone.

Family adventurers should check out Tervete Nature Park, More Safari or AB Amusement Park and Tarzāns – Sigulda Adventure Park, the largest open-air park in the Baltic States.

Latvia’s sprawling countryside is also a source of sustenance. The locals forage for organic ingredients that include everything from birch sap juice to berries and mushrooms.

Latvia has a world of cuisine for you to discover. A local staple is rye bread and you’ll find it in quite a few recipes – both savoury and sweet. Latvia has its own take on garlic bread which is traditionally enjoyed with a cold glass of beer and, with such a long coastline, Latvia’s menus feature all kinds of fish. Further inland, stewed meats and hearty vegetables are all on the menu. What you’ll find most of all is that Latvians eat the seasons so everything is freshly harvested. Latvia is also home to the most northerly vineyard in the world – we’ll raise a glass to that!
