Hamburg

Located in northern Germany, Hamburg is one of the most beautiful and charming cities in the world.

Take the ferry from Gothenburg to Kiel or the ferry from Trelleborg to Rostock and the city is an easy two hour drive by car. Hamburg has hundreds of canals, beautiful parks and gardens (Planten un Blomen is a must see), the stunning Lake Alster and the River Elbe. Hamburg offers visitors culture, musicals, world-class shopping, exciting nightlife and some stunning historical sites.

Take a city tour on the Hamburg Hummelbahn and get a great overview of the city – a great reference to get to know your surroundings is the city's central Jungfernstieg Boulevard which connects the Neustadt (New Town) with the Altstadt (Old Town). After London, Hamburg is Europe's second largest musical metropolis. A visit to the incredible Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall located in the harbour is a real treat. It’s become the city's new landmark and is one of the largest concert halls in the world. Take a guided tour of the unique building and enjoy the panoramic view of Hamburg from the PLAZA lookout point.

The Hamburger Rathhaus or City Hall is a unique attraction built in the late 19th century in a Neo-Renaissance style. With more rooms than Buckingham Palace - it’s huge and well worth a visit. If you do plan to travel to Hamburg don’t miss out on the Miniatur Wunderland where you’ll find the world's largest model railway. Stroll around the model trains, vehicles, planes and ships which represent real places around the world. The project was started in 2000 and currently covers an area of 1,490 m². It’s a brilliant place to visit and one of Hamburg’s most popular attractions. If you’re travelling with children take a trip to Hansapark, just north of Lübeck for a day of fun, play and dizzying heights! The theme and experience park has a huge number of fantastic attractions and shows as well as over 35 rides. If a calmer day is more your thing then a trip to the Hagenbeck Zoo is great fun too.

If it’s nightlife you’re after, well Hamburg won’t disappoint. Reeperbahn and St Pauli are the two best spots for party-goers and are some of the most popular areas of the city. Another great spot to enjoy a drink is the trendy Skyline Bar 20up at the Empire Riverside Hotel.  Here you can take in the beautiful views of the city, the harbour and the Elbe whilst enjoying a relaxing drink. Did you know The Beatles were born in Liverpool but grew up in Hamburg? Take in a tour every Friday at Beatlesplatz, Reeperbahn and experience the history, music and atmosphere.

Hamburg has over 4000 restaurants and an endless number of cafes. Don’t miss out on enjoying some of the best and freshest seafood. The city has more Michelin star restaurants than any other German city! Enjoy a trip to the Hamburg Fish Market where night owls and market enthusiasts meet early every Sunday to either end the evening or start the day in the historic fish auction hall. Enjoy some freshly caught fish or drink a frothy beer whilst enjoying the live music. A visit to a brewery is a must when in Hamburg and we recommend the Gröninger Private Brewery where you can enjoy typical German dishes and delicious Gröninger Beer bottled in old oak barrels.

And finally shopping – where do we begin? You’ll be spoilt for choice! From the gallery at Europa Passagen to the designer shops at Karoviertel, from Mönckebergsstraße to Neuer Wall, Spitalerstraße to McArthurGlen Neumunster, the city has something for everyone.
